Every weekend I make some kind of treat. Just for myself. Maybe sometimes for Logan. I’m a sucker for cupcakes and I like to decorate them more than I like to eat them. Wait, wait. That’s a lie. I actually like to eat them more.
I recently purchased Handmade Weddings and it is an AMAZING book. There’s all sorts of inspiration for parties and weddings. There’s one particular project that shows you how to make felt boutonnières. I tried to make them, but mine weren’t turning out as neat and pretty as I wanted them to. They kept turning out like these crazy and funky flowers that I kind of fell in love with. They take about a minute to make and they are super cute on top of a frosted treat! Read all of the instructions after the jump.
To make your own you’ll need:
- Felt (9 x 11 inches)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Toothpicks
Cut 3 x 9 inch strips.
Fold the strips in half lengthwise and cut (starting at the folded side!) 3/4 of the way to the edge.
Repeat the whole way down the strip.
Once it’s all cut, pull the top half to the right 1/4 inch.
Start at the right end and roll it up as tight or as loose as you would like. Use small drops of hot glue to secure it along the way.
Put a little drop of hot glue on one end of a toothpick and stick it inside the flower. Pinch the bottom tight until the glue dries, and you’re done! Stick these little flowers in the tops of your cupcakes and admire the cuteness.
PS – The platter these cupcakes are sittin’ pretty on is another DIY that I did for Dotcoms For Moms. Click here to learn how to make your own!

Hi! I have also fallen in love with Handmade Weddings, and unfortunately, when I tried making those sweet felt flowers, mine look more like yours and less like the beautiful photographs! Maybe its the quality of felt?…..
Lexy says
Hi Jessie! It MUST be the quality of felt. I tried and tried and tried to make mine pretty but I had no success! Oh well, mine will just have to be funky little mad-hatter shapes!

Where are those adorable cupcake holders from? They are so different, and cute!
Lexy says
Hi Katie! They’re from Ikea and so was the pan to cook them in! They’re a little more tall and skinny than short and round. But I love ’em!
