Hola! I’m feeling all exotic because I’ve been using a bunch of avocados up in here! Growing up, I didn’t love avocados. I thought they were slimy and mushy. The only thing they had going for them was the fact that they were green. And green happened to be my favorite color. Though they were pretty and good for you, I never wanted to try them. It wasn’t until college that I actually welcomed avocados into my life. I started to eat healthier and incorporate them into my recipes. PLUS – I heard that they did wonders for your hair. And they totally do. đ
Avocados are one of those versatile fruits that can dress up a whole bunch of recipes. But what if you want to craft with them? That’s where the seeds come in. Yes, I know they are also called “pits”, but I honestly hate that word. It’s ug. So we’re referring to them as “seeds” today. Avocados from Mexico recently approached me and asked if I would be interested in joining their “Spring For Avocados “campaign and come up with a little project using their avocados. Now that I love avocados, you can see why I was totally on board with this! They sent a bunch of avocados my way and I started eating. We had lots of guac over here. And cowboy caviar. Don’t know what that is? I’ll share a recipe for it next week because it’s delish!
I knew I wanted to do something incorporating the seeds. I have been gold-leafing a lot of small projects around our new place and decided to gild the seeds! It took ten minutes and I had these unique lil’ place card holders after I was done! Read on for the how-to.
To make your own avocado seed place card holders you need:
- avocado seeds (washed and dried)
- gold leafing pen and sheets (found at Michael’s or any other craft store)
- sharp knife (not pictured)
Using your gold-leafing pen, cover the bottom half of the seed with the glue mixture. It starts to set quickly and it will get on your hands. It’s no big deal.
Take a sheet of the gold leaf and press it onto the glue-covered bottom of the seed. Press all over to cover as much of the glue with the gold leaf as possible. Peel the sheet back and see where else needs to be covered. Some of the gold will be sticking up.
Pat down any stray gold leaf with your fingers. Do this gently. The gold leaf will set to the glue and shouldn’t rub off.
Once your seed is gilded, take a sharp steak knife and cut a small slit in the top. It doesn’t need to be huge, just wide enough for a piece of paper or cardstock to fit through.
Make some little name cards (these were made on cardstock with a pen) and stick them into the small slit at the top of the seed.
And voila! Now you have some fun little place card holders that look like little gold beads. So easy.
Fun, right? Avocados are more than just a snack to you now. I’d much rather play with my food than eat it. đ Oh wait. Just kidding. I’d rather eat it…

This is an EXCELLENT idea!! I eat, um, way too many avocados a week, so I love that now I have something to do with the seeds!
We go through avocados like crazy around here. Greta eats them plain, Chris uses them for his amazing tacos and I throw some on my salad every day for lunch. And THIS is such a cool project.
This is such a clever idea Lex. I eat avocados all the time but I’ve never thought about saving the seeds. Think I will next time so I can try something like this.
I love this idea! When I first married Kyler he made me try all sorts of food I thought I didn’t like and avocados were one of those things. Once I tried them I felt jipped for living 20+ years without them! Now we have them around our house all the time so I’ll be able to gather a lot of seeds for this craft!

Love the idea of using something that would likely have been thrown away or composted! My love of avocado’s began with guacamole but has expanded to include avocado and tomato sandwiches (my new lunch staple!)

I feel in love in a bordertown Mexico/Texas. We would buy avocados as big as a grapefruit and they would have to cut them in half, take the seed out, and put a hot pepper in the hole to keep it from turning brown. Something about the pit not being able to go through customs… not sure. But nothing like buttery avocado, a squeeze of lime and a pinch of salt on a fresh tortillas. Yum.

I fell in love with avocados when I was much younger and first out on my own. I discovered so many foods that were new to me! Avocados are still a favorite.

This is such a clever idea! I have truly always been a lover of avocados; it started when I was little (I SO loved to try new foods) and has continued throughout my adult life. BUT, I think the first time I fell in love with avocados was when my grandmother (who actually grows her own little avocado tree in Northern California!) shared with me the story of how when she was younger, she would bring an avocado and a spoon to work each day and that would be her lunch meal. That story is always the first thing to come to my mind when I think of avocados- just so simple, but I like to think that’s how avocados should be enjoyed. I bring an avocado a few times a week to work for my lunch, too, and eat it just the way she did- with a sprinkle of salt and a spoon. Heaven!
