I wanted to post this sooner, but I gave these as gifts and couldn’t spoil the surprise! Making these vases has to be one of the funnest things I’ve done to date. It only took a day. By night, I was super satisfied and super giddy as I wrapped these babies up.
To make your own you’ll need:
Glass vases (mine are from Ikea), Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint, a sponge, and a spray bottle filled with 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water
You have to use this type of paint. Using a silver metallic will not give you the mirror-like finish. You can find this paint here on Amazon or here at Walmart. (Walmart is cheaper…)
Spray the inside of your vase with this paint. Let dry for 20 minutes and paint another coat. Three coats will make the mirror finish thick enough. After your last coat, let the paint dry for about 30 minutes. Mist the inside of your vase with the vinegar and water mixture. Spray a little more on your sponge and lightly rub the inside of your vase. I rubbed in random areas and kept on until I got the look I was going for. Let your vases completely dry and then wipe the insides with a damp paper towel.
And that’s it! I’m seriously Mercury Glass-ing everything these days. Go crazy. 🙂

These are so cool! Could you do this from the outside? I have a glass lamp that would be cool to use, but I can’t get inside it… have you tried?
thanks!

I haven’t tried this on the outside of any glass object. The looking glass is made to be put on the inside because that is the side that reflects like a mirror. When looking at the inside of these vases, the silver is very dull so I don’t think it is the look you would want on your lamp. Maybe use some Metallic Spray Paint (link below) and before it’s completely dry, take a paper towel wet with a little vinegar and rub gently. That may give you the aged look that you’re wanting? Maybe I’ll try it this weekend and let you know how it works out!
