So I just LOVE birthdays. They’re a great excuse to throw a party! I love birthdays so much that I celebrate my half-birthday. And Logan’s. And the neighbor’s. They’re that awesome. One of my favorite parts? The cake. I love cake. And I love to decorate the cake. Ombre is just so trendy these days and I thought it could beย totally awesomeย to incorporate the trend with the candles! These seriously take 30 seconds once the wax is melted. Read the how-to below.
To make your own you’ll need:
- white birthday candles
- wax color blocks (crayons will work, too!)
- soy wax beads
- mason jar filled with cold water
- small glasses (one for each wax color)
- tongs
- wax paper
Using a butter knife, shave off a bit of each color block and add the colored wax and soy beads to the small glasses. Place the small glasses in a pot filled with boiling water and let the wax melt slowly.
Boom. Melted wax.
Grasp the candle by the wick with the tongs and dip it into the wax. After you have dipped the candle to the length you want, immediately submerge the candle into the mason jar filled with cold water. This will set the wax. Repeat these steps until your candle is colored to your heart’s desire.
Move onto the next color. Dip the whole rainbow, yo.
I cannot tell you how many candles I dipped over the weekend. I’m addicted to ombre. I can think of worse addictions. Like McDonalds. Did you know I quit that? Yeah. I can’t believe it either… If you like these candles, then you’ll love these dipped pots and this ombre tote!
What have you dipped this summer? We want to see it!

I’m totally with you on th ebirthday thing. I try to pull the “my birthday month is coming up” and my boyfriend always reminds me that I get a day (I don’t believe him though)
Celebrating my half birthday is not something I’ve ever thought to do, but I might have to start.
Lexy says
Logan dubs the week of his birthday “birthday week”. And he expects to be treated like a king the whole week. It’s cute, really. ๐ You should totally do the half birthday. It really spices up that six month mark.

I love the soft ombre effect AND the way the shape of the candle transformed into something more organic looking. You can’t lose with this one! P.s. We quit fast food, too. Greta? Hasn’t. That’s hard!
Lexy says
I love the shape at the bottom too. They are definitely prettier than storebought, if I do say so myself. ๐
It would be so hard to be around fast food when you’re trying to quit! Greta needs to be more considerate of addictions…

These are too cute! I love the possibilities of the idea and think that wax would make a wonderful ‘dipping’ medium for lots of things! Great job Lexy!!
Lexy says
Thanks, Erin! Wax is so fun to work with! I was dipping all sorts of candles this weekend. And my hands were SO soft afterwards. ๐
Kelly @ Studio DIY says
Adorable, Lexy! I actually just bought some candle making supplies to experiment with too!
Lexy says
Get it girl. I feel like candles are going to be the next big thing. They’re so easy to make and customize!
Ann Martin says
Oh these are so pretty! Thanks for sharing your idea.
Lexy says
Hi Ann! Thanks for stopping by. These candles can be made in a variety of colors. I would definitely use crayons next time to get some unique colors. ๐

Love the candles! I am into the color dipping trend too- I did my dining room chairs. I am NOT daring enough with color in my home, so four inches of color dipping is perfect for me, lol. http://www.abubblylife.com/2012/07/take-dip-into-color.html

I love the blues you chose! They’re subtle and pretty. We are house-sitting right now so I can’t decorate ANYTHING. I’ll just have to color my garden! ๐
