To kick off Mission: Merry 2012, I figured it was only appropriate to feature an advent calendar. Who doesn’t love opening something small (or BIG!!!) daily in anticipation of Christmas?! I know that it’s nothing new to paint some muslin bags and dress ’em up all pretty, but what makes this project so special and fun is the lovely lattice that the bags hang from. All you need is an afternoon to craft up a lattice advent calendar that keeps on giving the whole month long.
To make your own Lattice Advent Calendar you’ll need:
- 24 muslin bags (mine from Michael’s)
- craft paint in three different colors (i chose white, seafoam, and a bright tomato red)
- assorted paint brushes
- silver glitter
- number stamps
- wood lattice (finished in white at Home Depot)
- washi tape for hanging
- assorted goods to stuff (eg. cash)
Embellish the bags with paint, a little glitter, and number them with the stamps. Keep to three colors to keep it minimal and cohesive. You can follow a pattern, or decorate randomly. This took about 2 hours including drying time. Just sip a little Diet Coke and watch White Christmas while you work it. Once the bags are dry, lay them out on the lattice in the order you want them. Cut one end of the lattice down with scissors or gardening shears. (You’ll be surprised at how easily this wood cuts!). Hang the bags with washi tape and keep out of reach of greedy children/adults who don’t understand the importance of dollar bills. I mean candy. Just kidding about that last part.

A money advent calendar would be so choice. Maybe I have a thing for candy cane stripes, but I think 10 and 24 are the cutest things ever. Great idea, Lexy!! Can’t wait to see what else is coming at us.
