I love shapes. Shapes, shapes, shapes. I also love clean tabletops. I’ve said it before, but I’m very “Monica Gellar” when it comes to clean counters and coffee tables. Put a coaster under that beverage! Were you raised by wolves?! (My apologies if you were raised by wolves. That’s totally cool.) We’ve had some extra pieces of wood lying around from past projects and decided that my coaster collection was feeling a little low. These DIY geometric coasters took an hour to make and then I spent the rest of the afternoon admiring them and the protection they offer.
Materials Needed For Your Own DIY Geometric Coasters
- birch square
- level or ruler
- pencil
- table saw or jigsaw
- painter’s tape and craft paint
Start by drawing out hexagon shapes on the sheet of wood. A hexagon has 6 sides and each side of these coasters measures 2″.
Use a table saw or jigsaw to cut out the shapes. Lightly sand the edges to remove any split pieces of wood or splinters.
Paint them how you see fit! I chose to go with a pastel purple and a charcoal gray. My love affair with pastels continues…
Wait for the paint to dry and then brush or lightly spray a sealant on the top to protect the wood from any condensation from those delicious beverages you plan to sip.
Side note: I’ve been throwing frozen fruit in soda water lately (lately being those rare occasions when I’m out of Diet Coke and am too lazy to drive the 7 minutes to the store. Or the 4 minutes to Dairy Queen.) and it’s quite refreshing! I’m tellin’ ya, frozen fruit can be a real lifesaver.
And boom! These make a great gift and you can make bunches in under an hour! So go. Go and snag yourself a saw (or some really sturdy scissors) and make a million of these little guys. I feel a coaster party coming on.

Those raspberries tho. They look so refreshing! Could I buy a thinner wood and use scissors?

I think you could try these with a balsam fir, but I don’t know how sturdy they would be?

Going to have to try this! Right now I am using plain old cork coasts but would love to switch it up and use something that has a splash of color! Thanks for sharing 🙂
